LUV Angeles: A Loving Lullaby to the City of Angels

"LUV Angeles" is a song my brother Larry and I wrote and recorded over ten years ago. The song initially came to me as I was waking on December 9th of 2013. I sleepily recorded the inspired melody by humming into the voice memo app on an iPhone I keep next to my bed. Later that evening Larry and I created the music that you hear. I hummed the main melody to Larry and we found the tempo, laid down a simple drum track - a beat - and structured out three verses, bridge and chorus. While Larry recorded the three guitar tracks, I made dinner - spaghetti. It was recorded that fast. After we finished recording that evening, all the music you hear was complete. We haven't added or replaced any instruments since that night, only the vocals. I didn't have most of the lyrics that day, just the idea of them. What Larry recorded was to be simply the framework of the song so I could write the lyrics to it. Which I soon did. When the words came they came fast. Those words wanted to be birthed to that music. It was like taking dictation. It happens occasionally - where some messages from the Great Beyond flows to me and I just jot them down. This was close to that. 

Once we had a demo, our hope was that we could sell some of our other Karmic Jesters music and make enough money to come back and re-record the song with much greater production values, and more precise in its musical vision. Larry's three guitars were recorded in single takes, so there is some note searching as he plays. No stopping and no turning back, just continuing forward to the end - a lot like the journey of life. To me, there are many beautiful symbols and themes of life in this song, and why I think it’s so special. 

You see, this version was never meant to be heard publicly. It was only intended to be a demo - a sketch - something to be replaced later with a better version. Our dream plan was to do a complete production with a full band, orchestra and choir at the end. But alas, all that takes either a lot of personal money or outside funding and we've never had much (or any) of either. 

So LUV Angeles sat... mostly unlistened to... for years.

And then in January of 2025, the firestorms happened that terribly injured the city of Los Angeles and its psyche. L.A. was hurting and it troubled me dearly. I asked inside “How can I help?” and I remembered the song and wondered if it was something that could be helpful and healing to the people of the city and county of Los Angeles... and maybe the entire world. Right now or as soon as possible, maybe it can do some good?

So I have taken the song as it was originally demoed, cleaned it up a little bit and polished the mix. I found there is a sweetness and charm in its simplicity. It's like the story in the song of people who come to "LUV Angeles" to make their dreams come true. Just as we all have our personal desires and aspirations to be more than we are, so does this song. It's simple - a lullaby - and as lean as it almost possibly can be and still maintain its power. But the song dreams of having a full production with orchestra and choir, and I hope we will soon be able to. Maybe the song itself can create the platform and opportunity for its own transcendence. Create Magic!

But it will need some help - Yours.

My plan is to release the song in as many media platforms as possible and set it free. Release it to the world and charge nothing for it. Give it away. No financial obstacles. Nothing to impede its journey out into the world. The song's only desire is to go out into the world and do good. Encourage people who love the song to share it and to donate to whatever charity or cause they choose. Nothing specifically directed. Freedom to choose, with a humble plea to please try do good. 

My hope is that other Artists pick up the song and create with it. They can use what’s there and add more instruments to it, or re-record it all together. Other artists can make music videos using the song as its foundation. No restrictions. No permissions needed or royalties to be paid. 

Set the song free and let it fly! Unhindered by contract of financial restrictions, let “LUV Angeles” become whatever it wants to become. Wherever destiny leads.
